Police search for dog owner charged with animal cruelty

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Police in Shelby are trying to find a man wanted for animal cruelty.

Investigators discovered two pit bulls that were starved and neglected, chained up in a yard along Logan Street in Shelby on December 15.

One of the animals is pit bull that goes by the name of Boss.

He has been housed at the Cleveland County Animal Shelter for nearly a week.

The pit bull is down to 34 pounds which is half of his normal weight.

Tripp Bowling who runs the shelter calls Boss is the lucky one. The other animal named Buster had to be put to sleep.

Bowling said, "The dog that was euthanized is 23 pounds, and had this chain that was half of its body weight."

Animal control officers were appalled at the living conditions and said that pets would sleep in these blue 55 gallon drums.

Neighbors like Javis Burston defend the surroundings.

Man charged with beating dog to death

SHELBY, NC (WBTV) - Animals are often the silent victims of abuse.  But North Carolina has a new law with a lot of bite to put the criminals who harm pets in the doghouse.

A Cleveland County man is behind bars accused of beating his dog to near death.  An animal cruelty case the likes of which officers haven't seen before.

And now they're using a new law, called "Susie's Law," to go after the owner.  And if he's convicted it could land him in prison.

The law gets its name from a dog that was tortured and set on fire.

When North Carolina lawmakers were debating it last year supporters were saying you could get more punishment for setting a couch on fire than setting a dog on fire.

Animal cruelty laws got tougher.

We begin with the happy part to a sad story.
