Who wants to Go Pro with Steve Smith?

Every year, thousands of young football fans dream of breaking the huddle with hero Steve Smith. Showmars, a proud sponsor of Steve Smith’s Football ProCamp, is making that dream a reality for four Charlotte-area children this summer.

Showmars is giving away four spots to the 2013 Steve Smith Football ProCamp. Football fans can sign up by filling out an entry form at any of Showmars 28 Charlotte-Metro locations.

ProCamp is a youth athletic camp for children in grades 1- 8. Established in 1998, the camp provides thousands of youth the opportunity to attend camp with their sporting heroes. At the camp, attendees learn football fundamentals and meet children their own age with like interests.

This year’s ProCamp event will be held at Ardrey Kell High School on Monday, June 10, and Tuesday, June 11.

Local man graduates basic training in Texas

Air Force Airman Charles N. Edwards graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas.

The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.

Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

Edwards is the son of Sharon Edwards of Cox Lane Road, Stanley, and nephew of Mary Brennan of Morris Avenue, Mount Holly.

He is a 2012 graduate of East Gaston High School, Stanley.

USO of NC names Jeff Byers as Ambassador

The USO of NC, the leading organization responsible for lifting the spirits of troops and their families in North Carolina announced Thursday that Jeff Byers, a center for the Carolina Panthers of the National Football League, as their ambassador.

“As a child I remember looking up to soldiers with admiration, thinking of how honorable they were for their service to our country,” said Byers. “I've never lost the appreciation for their sacrifice and am grateful I can finally give back through the USO of NC. It's an honor to be part of such a selfless organization, and serve our troops for all they've given to protect our nation and our freedoms.”

Byers entered the NFL in 2010 and signed with the Carolinas Panthers in 2011.

Price is the daughter of Rodney England of White Rock Road, Grover.

She is a 2009 graduate of Crest High School, Shelby.

City to dedicate new Patriots Memorial at Veteran’s Day Observance

The City of Kings Mountain will host their annual Veteran’s Day Observance on Monday, November 12.

The observance will begin with a parade starting at the War Memorial on Railroad Avenue, across from the Joy Performance Center at 9:45 a.m. The Kings Mountain Police Department Honor Guard will step off the parade and will also include the Loch Norman Pipe Band and all veterans and their families who would like to join in the parade.

The parade will proceed to Patriots Park where the observance will continue.

At the site of the newly constructed Patriots Memorial Wall, there will be a dedication ceremony of the Vietnam Wall at 10 a.m. 

The Patriots Memorial, a public/private partnership, was designed by Ken Pflieger, AIA Architect and is located near the entry to Patriots Park at Cansler Street and Gold Street. The design will have space for those soldiers who died in combat during WWI, WWII, Korea and Vietnam.

Local woman wins $25,000 Kitchen Makeover Sweepstakes

SHELBY, NC - Lisa Roberts has shopped at the Food Lion store on 1523 Lafayette Road in Shelby, N.C., for the past 12 years.

Each shopping trip the stay-at-home mom tries to save by using coupons to buy groceries for her husband and two children.

But on Thursday, Roberts wasn’t looking for deals.

Instead, Food Lion named her its Grand Prize Winner in the Kitchen Makeover Sweepstakes, and presented her with a $25,000 check.

“I am very excited about this because I come in here all the time,” Roberts said during a brief check presentation Thursday morning.

The presentation was held in the lobby area of the Shelby store with customers and associates gathering briefly to help Roberts celebrate her new winnings.

“I am always entering Food Lion contests and this is the first time that I have won,” she said. “I really like the store and associates here in Shelby.
