SHELBY, NC (WBTV)- Police in Shelby say a Rutherford County woman caused a
five-car crash that killed a Cleveland County man last month.
Bridget Henson, 38, of Ellenboro, is charged with
misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, according to Shelby Police Chief Jeff
Ledford.
Police said Henson was driving a vending machine truck on
West Dixon Boulevard when she crashed into a line of cars stopped for a school
bus picking up children.
The impact of the crash set four vehicles ablaze.
The fire killed 60-year-old George Hope of Shelby, Ledford
said, because he could not escape his vehicle.
Henson was not speeding and there is no evidence she tried
to brake, Ledford said.
The accident occurred just before noon on April 30 and shut
down U.S. 74 for the better part of the day while investigators cleared the
scene.
Henson was given a $20,000 bond and was scheduled to appear
in court on Friday.
