Local artists compete in free exhibit

The Cleveland County Arts Council is holding its Annual Cleveland County Artists Competition this week.

Local artists exhibit their work and compete for awards totaling $2,050 in this prestigious competition.

Art lovers can catch a special reception announcing the winners at the Cleveland County Arts Council, located at 111 South Washington Street in Shelby, Thursday May 16, from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m.

Beginning Friday May 17, the exhibit can be viewed Mondays through Fridays, through June 20, from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Admission is free and open to the public.

Santa Claus will be in Kings Mountain on his “Fire Truck Express” for a couple of last minute stops to see the children before Christmas, and to get an update on their Christmas lists.

On Thursday morning, December 13, Santa will visit local daycare centers.

Then, on Saturday, December 15, Santa and his helpers will arrive on his “Fire Truck Express” for a visit to the Kings Mountain Historical Museum, during the Toys, Games & Trains Exhibit from 1 p.m.

Earl Scruggs Center awarded $20,000 from NC Arts Council

Destination Cleveland County has been awarded $20,000 from the North Carolina Arts Council for the Earl Scruggs Center: Music & Stories from the American South. 

The award has been used in development of an interactive exhibit for the Earl Scruggs Center called Meet Our Musicians and Storytellers.  The exhibit is available now online at www.earlscruggscenter.org and will also be available as a hands on interactive exhibit in the Earl Scruggs Center when it opens. 

Christmas Made in the South kicks off this weekend

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - The 32nd Annual Christmas Made in the South opens this Friday.  Get a jump start on holiday shopping and browse aisle after aisle of treasures at this year's event.  We're focused on keeping the world of fine artisans and craftspeople vibrant...come meet our wide array of vendors exhibiting their amazing art.

Follow the Current to Wild in the Water at Charlotte Nature Museum

Charlotte, NC – Dive into fun at Charlotte Nature Museum during this month’s Feature: Wild in the Water on Saturday, August 18, from 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

Dip your toes into why North Carolina streams, ponds, and lakes are important to our state’s ecology and what you can do to help protect them.

These natural water reserves are home to waves of critters on exhibit at the Museum including the spiny softshell turtle [Apaone spinifera] and the bullfrog [Lithobates catesbeianus] whose tadpoles can take three full years before fully metamorphosing into frogs.

During Wild in the Water, float into cool activities showcasing the wonders of water including the feeding of resident American alligator, Snappy [Alligator mississippiensis] at 11 a.m. and turtle and tortoise feedings at noon.

Applications available for Regional Artist Project Grant (RAPG)

The Arts & Science Council has applications available for the Regional Artist Project Grant.

The grant provides funds of up to $2,000 for individuals and groups of unincorporated artists to pursue projects that further enhance their artistic development by attending a professional advancement experience or purchasing/renting equipment.

“By virtue of helping the development of 30 plus artists every year, the Regional Artist Project Grant is one of the most impactful grant programs offered through ASC,” said ASC President Scott Provancher.

The grant is available to artists in all disciplines.

Shelby prepares for 2012 Cleveland County Fair

SHELBY, NC - Organizers are preparing for the 88th annual Cleveland County Fair.

The fair is set to return to Shelby in less than two months, running from September 27th - October 7th at the fairgrounds on East Marion Street in Shelby.

If you're planning to head out to this year's fair, plan to pay $8 for anyone age 13 or older, or $3 for children ages 6-12. Children five and younger get in free.

According to the Cleveland County Fair website, the annual event has become home to North Carolina's largest agriculture fair.
