Local man graduates basic training in Texas

Air Force Airman Charles N. Edwards graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas.

The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.

Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

Edwards is the son of Sharon Edwards of Cox Lane Road, Stanley, and nephew of Mary Brennan of Morris Avenue, Mount Holly.

He is a 2012 graduate of East Gaston High School, Stanley.

Holtmann gets contract extension

BOILING SPRINGS, NC (WBTV)- After going 21-13 in 2013 and being named the Big South Conference Coach of the Year, men's head basketball coach Chris Holtmann has received a contract extension from Gardner-Webb. Holtmann will now be coach of the Runnin' Bulldogs thru 2018.

Gardner-Webb finished 2nd in the South Division and made it to the finals of the Big South Conference tournament before losing to Liberty.

The program reached the 20 win plateau for the first time since 2001. The Runnin' Bulldogs were also the only team in the Big South to win at least 20 games this season.

“No Need 2 Speed” Campaign cites 14,542 motorists in NC

A total of 42,290 traffic and criminal citations were issued statewide during this year’s “No Need 2 Speed” campaign, which ran March 25 through 31.

Law enforcement officers from across the state partnered with the Governor’s Highway Safety Program to increase enforcement in an effort to put a stop to one of the main causes of crashes and fatalities on North Carolina’s roads – speeding.

“Law enforcement’s presence on our roads is imperative to reminding motorists to obey speed limits, and we greatly appreciate their dedication to keeping our roads safe,” said Becky Wallace, director of GHSP.

Officers also issued 3,157 safety belt and 587 child passenger safety violations and 1,111 drug charges.

Gun sales leveling off, but still high

LENOIR, NC (WBTV)- A steady stream of customers continued to come in the Guns Too store in Lenoir on Wednesday, evidence that the demand for guns has still not gone away.

Owner Joel Snyder, though, says he is starting to see things quiet down, sort of.

"The hysteria seems to have calmed somewhat," he said.

Gun sales have been the best they've ever had in recent months at the shop but with talk in Washington now focusing on background checks and not the weapons themselves, many buyers don't feel the urgency to make a purchase these days.

"I don't think they are going to ban any guns," said one man as he completed his purchase of a handgun.

Even the so called "assault rifles" are not included in the legislation as many thought they would shortly after the Newtown shootings last year.

The shop in Lenoir had three for sale on Wednesday.

McCrory signs "911 Good Samaritan" bill into law

RALEIGH, NC (WBTV)- North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory signed a bill into law Tuesday that aims to encourage drug overdose witnesses to seek help for the victims, rather than fear getting into trouble.

Senate Bill 20 (SB20), Good Samaritan Law/Naloxone Access , or simply the "911 Good Samaritan" laws, go into effect immediately. Lawmakers hope they will reduce drug overdose fatalities in North Carolina, by providing limited criminal immunity from prosecution charges for less than one gram of drugs or paraphernalia to people who call 911 to report an overdose.

The immunity also applies to underage drinkers who seek help for alcohol poisoning. In North Carolina, more than half of drug overdoses occur in the presence of another person, yet in most cases, officials say witnesses are afraid to call for help for fear of police and criminal repercussions for drug possession.

Gas prices falling, despite spring travel demand

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV)- If you have filled up at the pump lately, you've probably noticed there's not as much sticker shock. Gas prices have actually been going down.

This despite spring travel demand when prices usually rise.

But Tanda Misenheimer of Charlotte finds it hard to believe gas prices have been steadily dropping over the past couple of months.

"Well they see the difference, we don't," she said.

Even with the drop in prices, Tanda says it's still tough on her household budget.

"You can't go put five dollars like you used to in my day and get a half a tank of gas,"she said. "You can't do that now. You're putting $20 and $30 in now just to get a half a tank of gas."

But prices have been falling steadily after peaking at $3.80 a gallon in February. They are down 24 cents since then, an unusual trend says Angela Daley with AAA Carolinas.
