Police warn: Beware of transient contractors

Police warn: Beware of transient contractors

Spring is in the air as we watch the trees start to bud, flowers begin to bloom and the robins return to start nesting.

Spring is also the time for Transient Contractors to return in their attempts to take advantage of unwary or vulnerable consumers.

The standard attempt is a knock on your door and a person standing there trying to sell you a service.

Typical scams are repaving or sealing driveways, roof repairs or house painting.

IRS offers tips for taxpayers who missed the tax deadline

The IRS has some advice for taxpayers who missed the tax filing deadline.

  • File as soon as possible. If you owe federal income tax, you should file and pay as soon as you can to minimize any penalty and interest charges. There is no penalty for filing a late return if you are due a refund.
  • Penalties and interest may be due. If you missed the April 15 deadline, you may have to pay penalties and interest. The IRS may charge penalties for late filing and for late payment. The law generally does not allow a waiver of interest charges. However, the IRS will consider a reduction of these penalties if you can show a reasonable cause for being late.
  • E-file is your best option. IRS e-file programs are available through Oct. 15. E-file is the easiest, safest and most accurate way to file. With e-file, you will receive confirmation that the IRS has received your tax return.

Mayfield case: Motion to suppress evidence denied

CALDWELL COUNTY, NC (WBTV)- Former NASCAR driver Jeremy Mayfield was in court in Lenoir Monday morning for a hearing.

The hearing was an attempt to suppress the search warrant in a Caldwell County theft case.

The judge denied the motion to suppress. Had he not, the search warrant and everything obtained from it would not be admissible in court.

Mayfield is facing felony larceny charges in the case from 2011.

Investigators said they found thousands of dollars in stolen equipment at Mayfield's home. They also reported finding several stolen firearms and methamphetamine.

Mayfield was suspended indefinitely from NASCAR in May 2009 after testing positive for methamphetamine. Mayfield told WBTV the random drug test was inaccurate, and that it showed positive because he had taken allergy medication and Adderal for his ADD.

Wells Fargo boosts profits, ATMs

Wells Fargo boosts profits, ATMs

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV)- Wells Fargo has announced record profits for the 1st quarter of 2013. The bank is also boosting its ATMs.

"This ATM knows your habits and your features and what you do here," says Wells Fargo Area President Leigha Smith. She introduced us today to the bank's high tech new ATMs. She says they're more like a personal assistant than the old money machine we're used to.

"This get-to-know you better ATM really knows our customers," she says. "They get cash, that's the first thing that comes up. If they typically deposit checks or cash that's the first item that comes up, deposit cash."

Sometimes personal greetings even come up.

"That was a little shocking to me," says Wells customer Joe Marshall. "On my birthday, it said ‘Happy Birthday.' And it started the week of my birthday, and I was like how do they know that? But it showed up and I appreciate that."
