The NC Department of Transportation recently named the winners of the 2010 Wildflower Awards.

Division 12, which includes Alexander, Catawba, Cleveland, Gaston, Iredell and Lincoln counties, received first place for “Best Overall Division Wildflower Program.”

Division 13, which includes Buncombe, Burke, Madison, McDowell, Mitchell, Rutherford and Yancey counties, received honorable mention for best overall division.

Division 12 also received first place in the “William D. Johnson Daylily Award” for flowers on US Highway 74 at I-85 in Gaston County, and first place in the “Best Regional Wildflower Planting” Western Region for the flowers planted in the I-85 median at US Highway 74 in Cleveland County.

Trial set for Gaston Co. man accused in deaths of 3 women; 2 dumped in York Co.

GASTONIA/YORK COUNTY (WBTV) — A North Carolina man accused of killing three women, dumping two of them in South Carolina is to go on trial for capital murder in September.

48-year-old Danny Hembree Jr. has been charged with three counts of first-degree murder and could face the death penalty if convicted.

Hembree is accused of last year's killing of 17-year-old Heather Catterton whose body was found near Clover, S.C. in October 2009.

GASTON COUNTY - A tractor trailer fire shut down lanes of I-85 in Gaston County for several hours early Tuesday morning.

Firefighters from Crowder’s Mountain Volunteer Fire & Rescue, The City of Gastonia Fire Department, and Kings Mountain Fire Department responded to the southbound lanes of I-85 at exit 10B (US Highway 74) after receiving a dispatch referencing a fire at 3:45 a.m.

Cold settles in after snow hits mountains, closing some school systems

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - The snow which fell in the North Carolina mountains this weekend is still causing transportation problems for some counties prompting school officials to cancel class for Tuesday.

More than six inches of snow fell in the mountains this weekend with a couple of inches reported in areas closer to Charlotte and the foothills.

Watauga County has already canceled classes for Tuesday, but it will be an optional annual leave day for teachers.  In Avery County, classes are canceled Tuesday for both students and teachers.

Snow continued to fall at Grandfather Mountain on Monday according to spokesperson Landis Wofford.
