Lumber crashes through woman's windshield, video goes viral

SHELBY, NC (WBTV) - A woman is lucky to be alive after a two-by-four came crashing through her windshield while driving down a rural road in Cleveland County.

The driver says she was recording two trucks driving erratically in front of her in Shelby when one of the trucks ran over a two-by-four which then sent the piece of lumber crashing through the woman's windshield.

Fortunately, the woman was not hurt, but the lumber came extremely close to hitting her.

The woman was going about 45 miles-per-hour when the accident occurred.

The video was posted on YouTube and has since gone viral. It was featured on a network morning news show.

BBB warns: First email phishing scams appear from massive data breach

Charlotte region cleaning up after severe storms topple trees, power lines

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - A line of severe thunderstorms moved across the Charlotte region early Tuesday morning leaving behind downed power lines, damaged homes and blocked roads.

At the peak of the storm at 4 a.m., more than 256,000 Duke Energy customers were without power. Duke Energy says 60 to 70-mile-per-hour wind gusts uprooted large trees and brought down power lines.

As of 4:30 p.m., Duke Energy's website said there were still about 180,000 outages systemwide. The counties in the WBTV coverage area with the highest number of outages include: Cabarrus (1,314), Catawba (5,416), Cleveland (8,271), Gaston (17,375), Lincoln (6,115), Mecklenburg (43,840), Rowan (12,511) and York (6,802).

About 300 additional Duke Energy workers are traveling from the Midwest area to assist with restoring power throughout the company's coverage area in the Carolinas.

Kings Mountain woman severely injured in wreck

CLEVELAND COUNTY, NC (WBTV) - A Kings Mountain woman was severely injured Monday afternoon in single-vehicle wreck in eastern Cleveland County.

The accident happened around 2 p.m. on Range Road.

According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol, April Warren was driving southbound when she went off the road, lost control of her car and struck a tree.

The highway patrol says Warren was not wearing a seat belt.

She suffered extensive injuries to one arm and was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

The highway patrol says charges are pending the result of the investigation.

Report card day for Cleveland County Schools

CLEVELAND COUNTY - If you have a child enrolled in the Cleveland County School system, don't forget to clear off a spot on the refrigerator on April 5.

All students Kindergarten through twelfth grade will receive their report cards on Tuesday.

Aerospace Systems Manufacturer to add 25 jobs in Cleveland County

SHELBY - Gov. Bev Perdue today announced that Curtiss-Wright Controls, a manufacturer and service provider for the aerospace and defense industries, will expand its facility in Cleveland County. 

The company plans to create 25 jobs and invest $12.95 million during the next three years in Shelby.  The project was made possible in part by a $130,000 grant from the One North Carolina Fund.

“Curtiss-Wright is bringing more 21st century jobs to our state and expanding North Carolina’s growing aerospace cluster,” said Gov. Bev Perdue.  “Like so many other companies, Curtiss-Wright sees the value of our skilled workforce and nationally acclaimed business climate. We’re pleased to announce such terrific news from a company and an industry whose roots all come back to North Carolina, where two brothers – namesakes of this company – made the first flight on the Outer Banks.”

Curtiss-Wright Controls is a segment of the Curtiss-Wright Corporation devoted to motion control systems required by the aerospace and defense industries.  A new contract will allow the company to expand its Flight Systems units located in Gaston and Cleveland counties.

If you have damage to your home, your roof or trees on your property from last night's storm, the BBB has a warning for you to watch our for 'storm chasers' and offers ten tips for hiring a home repair contractor. 

“All it takes is a business card, a cell phone, some photocopied flyers and a hammer for someone to claim they are a contractor,” said BBB President Tom Bartholomy. “The contractor who shows up may actually be a ‘storm chaser’ who is based out-of-state and is using his pick-up truck as an office.”
